Figuring Out Buyer Behavior No. 2 15A


Through my interviews this week, I found that the most important factor in my segment is quality. All of my interviewees agreed that style is not important when it comes to the device. They thought that it should have a charger, rather than, batteries. However, my last interviewee said that batteries could work if it alerted the user when the batteries are low. Also, she said that it should hold a charge for 24-48 hours. One of my interviewees suggested that it have a back-up battery just in case it was not charged. I think this is a great idea.
One of my interviewees said that it should be able to shoot out pepper spray, but I feel that that would be adding too much to the device and mishaps could happen with it, as well.
My interviewees said they would buy it online or in superstores, specifically, amazon, Walmart, and target.
I was surprised with the wide range of price that each interviewee said they would be willing to pay. The price ranged from $45 to $200.

Overall, the quality of the product should be most focused on, which means, ensuring that the GPS feature, alarm feature, and calling the police will work every time. I think that instead of just being pushed, the button should be held down for a few seconds (this will keep accidents from happening). Also, I think a good price would be $50. I have researched similar products that use location services to track, as well as, small alarms. Therefore, $50 is probably a reasonable price. The only setback is trying to figure out how to eliminate extra fees and monthly charges for the GPS and calling service, which is something that is important to my segment. However, if the monthly fee was small, say around $10 I think they would be willing to pay this.

  1. My segment also cares about quality. However, efficiency is the most important to my consumers. Wow, the price range your consumers are willing to pay is shocking. I’m surprised they want a charger instead of a battery, since a charge won’t hold as long. I also need to figure out a monthly fee for my service. Should there be a discount or not? I wonder if there is a particular formula to figure out how much to charge monthly.

  2. Quality can often gain customers through level of satisfaction. Pin pointing each want detail for a product like this can really benefit the bottom line. The range you mentioned on what consumers would spend gives you great opportunity to find ways to meet the quality of the higher end with maybe more features and possibly a lower priced option with less features to meet both ends of the price levels.

  3. Hi Brandi, very interesting post. Due to the currently available self-defense products being relatively cheap, I am a little surprised that the price people said they would be willing to pay for this product was as high as $200. One challenge that I can see being a problem for this business is the high price point of $50 and a monthly fee. Despite this being a better product, people may opt for a cheaper option.
